It’s one of the most confusing moments when you live with Type 1 diabetes.
You haven’t eaten.
You haven’t forgotten your insulin.
Yet your blood sugar is climbing anyway.
For a long time, I assumed this only happened because I’d made a mistake somewhere. But over the years, I’ve realised that food is only one piece of the puzzle.
There are plenty of reasons your blood sugar can rise without eating, and understanding them can save you a lot of frustration.
The Dawn Phenomenon
If your blood sugar is high first thing in the morning, the dawn phenomenon could be responsible.
During the early hours, your body releases hormones that prepare you to wake up. These hormones can increase blood sugar, even before breakfast.

Stress
Stress affects more than your mood.
Hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline can make your body more resistant to insulin and encourage the liver to release stored glucose.
I’ve noticed work stress has sometimes shown up on my Libre before I’ve even realised how stressed I was.

Illness
Even a mild cold can make blood sugar rise.
When your immune system is fighting an infection, your body often needs more insulin than usual.
Dehydration
Not drinking enough water can make blood sugar readings appear higher because glucose becomes more concentrated in the bloodstream.
Something as simple as drinking more water can sometimes help.

Injection Sites
This was a big lesson for me.
Repeatedly using the same injection sites affected how consistently my insulin worked.
Once I started rotating properly, my blood sugars became much more predictable.

Hormones
Daily hormonal changes can affect insulin sensitivity.
Some days your usual insulin doses simply won’t behave the same way.
What Helps Me
When I notice an unexplained high, I ask myself:
- Have I slept well?
- Am I stressed?
- Am I getting ill?
- Have I been drinking enough water?
- Have I been rotating my injection sites?
Looking for patterns has stopped me blaming every high reading on food.

Final Thoughts
One of the biggest lessons Type 1 diabetes has taught me is that food isn’t always the answer.
Sometimes the reason for a high blood sugar has nothing to do with what you’ve eaten.
Understanding those other factors can make diabetes feel much less confusing.
