Freestyle Libre 2 Review for Type 1 Diabetes: My Honest Experience (Alarms, Accuracy & Daily Use)

If you’re living with Type 1 diabetes, you’ll know that tracking your blood sugar isn’t optional, it’s essential.

Over the years, I’ve tried different ways to monitor my glucose, but one tool that’s become part of my daily routine is the FreeStyle Libre 2.

Like most things in diabetes management, it’s not perfect but it’s made a big difference to how I understand and control my blood sugar.

This is my honest experience using it day to day.

First Impressions and Ease of Use

One of the best things about the Libre 2 is how simple it is to use.

You apply the sensor to the back of your arm, and from there, you can scan it using your phone. The process is quick, and once you get used to it, it becomes second nature.

It’s one thing checking your glucose in the moment but seeing how your entire day flows gives you a much better understanding of what’s actually going on.

This is especially useful if you’re trying to improve consistency or fine-tune your insulin.

The Alarms (Helpful… But Not Perfect)

Now, this is the part that most people with a Libre 2 will relate to.

The alarms.

They’re designed to alert you when your blood sugar goes too high or too low, which is obviously important. But in real life, they can be a bit hit and miss.

I’ve had nights where the alarm goes off and wakes me up, even when things aren’t too bad.

And other times, it feels like it alerts you a bit too late like when your blood sugar is already quite high, instead of warning you earlier when it was starting to rise.

That said, I’d still rather have the alerts than not have them at all.

It’s just something you learn to manage over time.

Accuracy and Reliability

In general, I’ve found the Libre 2 to be fairly accurate but not perfect.

There are times where readings can lag behind your actual blood sugar, you might double check with a finger prick and the numbers don’t match exactly.

That’s normal with most CGMs.

The key is to use it for trends and patterns, rather than relying on every single reading being exact.

A Small Upgrade That Makes a Big Difference

One thing that doesn’t get talked about enough is keeping the sensor in place.

If you train, sweat, or just live a normal active life, there’s a chance the sensor can loosen or come off early.
